The Natural Park of the Dolomites of Ampezzo was founded on the 22 March 1990 by Law number 21 of the Veneto Region and spreads out over an area of 11,000 hectares to the north of Cortina d’Ampezzo, on the border with Alto Adige (South Tyrol) in the heart of the Eastern Dolomites. Various access roads are available for the visitors: the main roads leading to the Falzarego, Cimabanche and Tre Croci passes, with dozens of forest trails and paths of 300km. Among the tourist routes are 8 metalled roads and 6 equipped trails, some of which are what remains of the mountain roads used during the Great War. There are 11 alpine huts in the Park and in the areas surrounding it. On the Lagazuoi, Tofana and Cristallo massifs cableways operate during the summer months as well, reaching fairly high altitudes, while along the access road to Malga ra Stua, in the Croda Rossa group, a public shuttle service is available.tta.
Cycling at Cortina
Cortina is ideal for cycling lovers. A transport service is available for cyclists travelling with their bikes. The bus is equipped with a trailer which can transport 30 bikes through the cycling route.
From Calalzo to Cortina
The bus service supports cyclists who wish to travel the cycling route “Lunga Via delle Dolomiti”. It runs from Calalzo railway station which has railway connections with Venice, Treviso and Padua. By travelling up through the Boite Valley, you will arrive at Cortina d’Ampezzo, from where you can return to Calalzo by bike following the cycling route along the old railway line (36km approx.).
From Cortina to Dobbiaco
To reach Dobbiaco, you can take the former railway which is now a cycling track. The road is slightly steep, till you reach the Cimabanche pass (1530 m s.l.m.), from where you can cycle downhill all the way to Dobbiaco. It is a 30 km, perfectly preserved track immersed in nature. From Dobbiaco you can visit San Candido or else take a bus back to Cortina.
From San Candido to Lienz
A 44 km track, which can be easily covered by every type of bicycle, will take you from San Candido to Lienz. It is ideal for newbies and children. You can then take a train back home (the bike can be left in a wagon, appropriately for this use).
